Recipe and technique questions

Stuck on a step in one of our recipes, or unsure which ingredient substitution will work? Send the dish name and where the process went sideways. A photo of the result helps enormously. We answer these first because cooking is time-sensitive — your braise should not wait three days for a reply.

Corrections and regional perspectives

If a page misidentifies an ingredient, a technique description contradicts your family's practice, or a regional guide gets your hometown wrong, we want to hear it. Hunan food culture is deep and locally contested, and our editorial standards commit us to publishing corrections. Tell us where you learned your version — context makes a correction verifiable.

Restaurant tips and field reports

Found a Hunan restaurant abroad that deserves attention, or a dish in Hunan we have not documented? These emails directly shape our restaurant guides and future coverage.

Partnerships, media, and licensing

For interviews, syndication, or collaboration proposals, use the subject line "Partnership" so we can flag it for the right review. Please note that we do not accept paid recipe placements or sponsored restaurant reviews — proposals that require us to compromise the standards described on our about page will be declined.

Before You Write

Three quick self-service options often answer questions faster than email can. The site search covers all eight hundred plus pages. Our beginner's guide answers most getting-started questions. And each ingredient profile includes substitution guidance, which resolves the single most common question we receive. If none of those fit, the form above — or a direct email — reaches a human.

Response expectations: we read every message and typically reply within two business days. Weekend and holiday messages queue for the next working day; detailed recipe-troubleshooting threads can take a day longer because we often re-test the step in question before answering.

About the Newsletter

The HunanFlavor newsletter goes out roughly twice a month. Each issue carries one new recipe in full, one short ingredient or technique deep-dive drawn from the archive, and a plain-language note on what is seasonal in Hunan kitchens right now. We do not sell the list, we do not share addresses, and every issue carries a one-click unsubscribe link that works. Past readers most often write in about the seasonal notes — they are written the same week you receive them, not batch-generated months ahead. The signup form sits on this page and in the site footer; confirmation is double opt-in, so check spam if the confirmation email does not arrive within a few minutes.
